Library Partnership (LP) Rating is a rubric-based evaluation of journal publishers. It is a new metric that can sit alongside traditional metrics such as downloads, cost per use, interlibrary loan requests, and annual cost increases. LP Rating is unique in determining how well a publisher’s practices align with library values around community, openness, and preservation.

In this era when new business models, new publishers, and generally static budgets make decisions of what to support more difficult than ever, LP Rating facilitates clear communication between libraries and publishers. LP Rating helps librarians make more informed collections decisions, and publishers can use LP Rating to align their practices more closely with library values.

External reviewers and two LP Advisory Councils, made up of librarians and publishers, provided input on the rubric between 2021 and 2024. Ten publishers have been rated to date. Ratings are completed by librarians who serve as scorers.

This panel includes a member of each advisory council–a publisher and a collections librarian–as well as the two librarians who created LP Rating. Presenters provide a look at the LP Rubric 1.1 and the complementary LP Publisher Questionnaire and discuss potential uses of the rating’s tiers and categories.
