Let’s assume a 100 kWp solar power plant produces 400 units of power a day. In a corporate building with a rooftop solar installation, 350 units are consumed during the daytime. The remaining 50 units get exported back to the grid during the day through a Bi-directional meter. During the night-time, the grid supplies 100% of the electricity requirement for the building. At the end of the month, 50 units that were exported each day get credited to the customer’s electricity bill from the DISCOM thereby helping consumers reduce their electricity bills every year.
Thus, with the net metering policy in place, users also do not need to invest in expensive batteries to store the surplus power produced. For DISCOMs, one of the biggest advantages of Net Metering is that it helps trim peak load demand during the day and reduces load shedding.

Independent studies have found that since the rooftop solar systems generate electricity near the point where it is consumed, the rooftop solar plant reduces transmission and distribution (T&D) losses and improves grid resilience as well.
