Cameo White w/Black interior, 455/310hp, 4-spd. manual transmission.
Most automobile aficionados recognize the Pontiac G.T.O. as the first muscle car. Pontiac was known as the “Wide Track” performance division of GM back in the late ’50’s thru the ’60’s. And although the G.T.O. was considered the flagship, there were a number of other very notable performance cars to come out of the Pontiac plant. The Firebird was introduced in ’68 to enter the Pony Car wars that were heating up between Ford’s Mustang introduced in ’64 and Chey’s Camaro that was introduced in ’67. The firebird shared most of the Camaro’s sheet metal, but under the hood was pure Poncho in the form of a small block 327ci V8. Just one of a number of engines offered during the car’s late ’60-early ’70’s heyday. In ’69 a new model was introduced called the Trans Am. Thus . . . A legend was born!
Over the years, the Trans Am evolved thru many generations until it was ultimately discontinued in ’02. But, during that time there were a number of very special editions of the T/A. One of these was the SD455. Introduced in ’73 and produced for only two years, the SD was and is considered one of the high-watermarks in Pontiac performance! The last hoorah, if you will of the classic Trans Am's. The SD455 stood for Super Duty 455ci V8. It's reported, likely made-up 310-hp rating easily embarrassed the 245-hp output of that year’s top Camaro and put the SD in league with the big-block dinosaurs that had ruled a few years before. But it was only the beginning. The engine was designed to be an emissions-friendly starter kit, purposely packaging a mild camshaft and relatively restrictive exhaust manifolds with a heavily fortified block. It even had provisions for a dry-sump oil pump. Forged steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and modified cylinder heads rounded out an engine that begged for extensive modifications. In other words, it was a hot rod in the making!
This awesome and rare (1 of only 72 4-speeds built) example has been collector owned and features a correct (dated 11/72), but not original SD 455 engine (replaced under warranty back in ’74) with all the correct components, M20 4-spd. manual transmission, and Safe-T-Track rear end with 3.42 gears.
The car was treated to a beautiful re-paint in the correct Cameo White back in ’07 and it still looks show quality! The interior is all original, but looks pristine and features Custom bucket seats, a factory-correct AM/FM stereo w/8-track tape player, rear defogger, tinted glass, console, power front disc brakes, power steering, and period-correct Firestone Wide Oval tires. And as if the car wasn’t impressive enough, the excellent paperwork and documentation is the icing on the cake! It includes; Window Sticker, Dealer Invoice, Dealer Purchase Order, Factory Invoice, complete Owner’s Kit, PHS paperwork, and more!
