A lot of people ask why I call myself the Top Rail Politician. Well, it started back in the Gulf country in the 80s, sitting on the top rail of the horse yards, where blokes would argue politics, science, and world affairs after a long day on the land.

We didn’t have much, but we had opinions and the guts to speak them. These days, our real politicians sit on the fence just like we did…only difference is, they don’t stand for anything. Left, right it’s all about power, not people.

In this video, I share the true story behind the name and recite my poem the Top Rail Politician, a reflection on how the bush taught me more about leadership, grit, and common sense than any Canberra office ever could.
