From mild and severe arthritis, to sports injuries and harsh work environments, subchondral fracturing is common. In short, the impact causes a collapse of the bone underneath the cartilage - the very structure that keeps the cartilage alive. Most of these patients initially tell us about swelling and aching at night as well as stiffness in the morning that requires the ankle "time to warm up".

Treatment varies from oral anti-inflammatories and temporary cortisone injections to ankle arthroscopic procedures, and usage of new biologics (such as bone marrow 'stem cell' treatment - video linked below).
