Toronto’s punk scene had its first real home in the summer of 1977, the Crash ’n’ Burn Club at 15 Duncan Street.
Run by The Diodes and their manager in the basement of the building, it was anarchic, sweaty, loud, and unforgettable. But not everyone was thrilled including the decidedly un-punk-rock tenants upstairs: the Liberal Party of Ontario.
After just two months of chaos, the club was forced to shut down on August 6, 1977. It may have crashed and burned, but it left behind a legacy as Toronto’s first true punk venue.
