HANDS FOR HONDURAS
30th ANNIVERSARY PRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION:

They were 20 volunteers from Reno, Nevada. They traveled a
world away to Honduras to help build a hospital. What they
found there was a little “slice of Heaven”. A place where they
were free to worship, sing their songs and explore their
Spirituality like they’d never done before! As a result,
not one of them returned home the same person!

HANDS FOR HONDURAS Part One

It all begins January 2nd, 1993 when the New Year provides a window-of
opportunity for escaping the worst snowstorm to hit the Reno area in over
30 years! The stark contrast between this Winter Wonderland and the tropical
paradise we were headed for in Central America provides an interesting
backdrop to start and end this amazing adventure!

Twenty different people from 20 different backgrounds came together
with one common mission: to help missionaries John & Audrey Spence
build a hospital in a remote area of Honduras. Three main Reno churches
provided the volunteers: 1.WAREHOUSE CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES w/
Pastor Mark Evans 2. GREATER LIGHT CHRISTIAN CENTER w/ music
director Terrell Taylor and 3. THE LIGHTHOUSE: a live-in ministry led by
Ben Sanchez and his wife Anita. The first person to introduce himself was
narrator for this series, Howard DuPree, who had been to Honduras before
and coordinated every aspect of this spiritual journey! Once settled in, the
real work begins but first our host Missionary John Spence gives a guided
tour of the construction that has already been completed on his dream for the
Good Samaritan Hospital. Pastor Mark Evans gets his hands dirty while
demonstrating how each individual brick is made-by-hand in the Honduran
sun! Before shaving his beard off, he offers his hopes for the full group on
this life-changing adventure!

This initial episode sets the tone for what is to follow as set backs are
inevitable in the mission field. Part One ends with a cliff-hanger as the
school bus providing our transportation runs out of gas leaving us all
stranded on the side of the road with the Honduran nightfall quickly
approaching! Just the first of many challenges to conquer as this overall
two-week adventure is just beginning!!
