The newspapers renamed it as the CASE of the century. The disappearance of the Baroness De Rothschild after 30 years remains still today an open case
On 29 November 1980, in the mysterious mountains of the Sibillini, Marche, were lost the tracks of an English Lady, Bishop Jannette May, divorced wife of the powerful banker Evelyn de Rothschild and his former housekeeper, the Friuli Gabriella Gerrin.
The skeletons of the two in their forties, and their bags were found on Jan. 27 1982, more than a year after their dissappearance, near the cemetery of Fiastra, a few kilometers from the place where they were seen last. They were in a forest, scattered in an area of 200 square meters, an area patrolled by huge hunting groups, more than a thousand men employed for the purpose. The remains were found by three local hunters, eleven days after the husband of Jeannette put a bounty of 250 million liras.
The crime of Sibillini is an unsolved case. The survey explored several tracks: kidnapping, an accident in the mountains and the criminality (mafia, art-obejts’ recycling etc.). The surveys are interwoven with the theft at Christhie's in Rome and with the circles of Sergio Vaccari, an Italian antiquarian killed in London, until his arrival to the Calvi procedure.
A Long and difficult investigation, that became an international incident, which ended with an "open verdict".
On 25 September 1989 the investigating judge at the Court, Iacoboni Alessandro issues the sentence “double murder by unknown on behalf of unknown, unknown even to the dynamics of homicide.
After twenty-four years, in 2006, Professor Franco Maria Venanzi, professor of forensic molecular diagnostics at the University of Camerino, through DNA testing allows the recognition of the remains of Gabriel Guerin and is working to discover the DNA of Jannette May, officially extinct, for the lack of living relatives.
With the work of Professor Venanzi, 30 years after the death of the Baroness De Rothschild, the cold case file number 2736/1980, could be reopened.
