The State of Streaming Music on Apple Watch!
Welcome to my video about streaming music on your Apple Watch. In this video I’m going to talk about How to control music on your Apple Watch from some of the most popular streaming services, such as Spotify, Google Play, Youtube & Amazon Music & of course Apple Music.
Spotify is one of the most popular streaming services next to Apple Music & it just recently came out with its own watch app. The app does require a connection to your iPhone though. It doesn’t let you stream over your cellular connection. So going for a jog listening to Spotify without your iPhone still isn’t a possibility yet, but hopefully they’ll change that in the near future! The Spotify app is still useful and does add a level of convenience though. You’ll find recently played albums and playlists. Further, you can play, pause, skip forward, & skip back with the app’s playback controls. It also lets you adjust the volume. The app also has support for adding songs to your favourites, as well as changing output devices. There’s also information about the currently playing playlist or album, but it only shows the first 2 or 3 songs, so this isn’t overly useful. Spotify did go all out with their complications though. They have a complication of each size & type, regardless of which watch face you use, as long as there’s a complication space you can setup the Spotify complication on it. The complication itself is just a link to run the app, but that’s still pretty handy if you use it often. If Spotify is your go-to music service on your iPhone, then the Spotify app for your Apple Watch should transfer some of the same useful features to your wrist.
All of the other Non Apple Music streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Google Play & Youtube Music don’t have Apple Watch apps as of yet. But on the up side you can control them using the Now Playing app on your Apple Watch once you’ve started using the app on your iPhone. At least you can leave your iPhone in your pocket after you’ve starting the app on your phone. If you’re going to be doing this a lot I would suggest adding the now playing complication on your watch face to make your life easier. The now playing complication is only available as a Large complication, so there are limitations when trying to add it to your watch face, as some watch faces don’t have a slot for that type of complication. If you don’t want to use it as a complication then I would at least recommend adding the now playing app to your apple watch’s dock to make it easier for you to access. To add the now playing app to the dock open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, scroll down & choose dock. You can set the dock up to show the recent apps used or your favorites. Once you’ve chosen favourites you can tap edit in the upper right hand corner & then scroll through the list of apps to find the now playing app, press the green plus button on the left and that will add it to your favourites on the dock. While in this menu you can grab and rearrange the apps on the dock by hard pressing the hamburger looking button on the right of each item to change the order they appear on your Apple Watch. Once complete, press the done button in the upper right corner. Now to easily access the now playing app at any time on your Apple Watch just press the side button on your Apple Watch to access the dock and scroll to the top by swiping with your finger or scrolling using the digital crown to select the app. If you’re going to be using it a lot I think this is a much easier way to get to the now playing app then going through the app list every time!
So now lets talk about Apple Music, if you have an Apple Watch it’s currently the only service that lets you stream & use it completely independent of your iPhone, especially if you have a cellular Apple Watch. You can save music locally on your Apple Watch or stream to it over your cellular connection. & of course Apple Music has complications in every size. The majority of the Apple Watch complications even present you with useful info such as the song title in the smaller ones & Song, artist & status in the larger ones.
If you plan to be listening to music without your iPhone present often, then Apple Music seems to be the best choice for music on your wrist right now.
