In the 10th century emerged one of the most powerful countries of medieval Europe: Rus. Stretching from lake Ladoga to the shores of the Black Sea, it was a conglomerate of cities and tribes connected by inland waterways, and ruled from the metropol of Kiev. Owing to the prominence of this city, the history books often call the dominion: “The Kievan Rus”.
