“The Black Indians” (a.k.a.: The Freed Men) are Indigenous American People, defined as Indigenous American due to their affiliation with Indigenous communities and being culturally Indigenous American, who also have significant African American heritage.

Many Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, such as the Narragansett, Pequot, Wampanoag and Shinnecock, as well as people from the Nations historically from the Southeast, such as the Choctaw, Creek and Cherokee, have a significant degree of African and sometimes European ancestry, as well.

Historically, certain Indigenous American tribes have had close relations with African Americans, especially in regions where slavery was prevalent, or, where free people of colour have historically resided.

Members of the Five Civilized Tribes participated in holding & adopting enslaved African Americans in the Southeast and some enslaved or, formerly enslaved people migrated with them to the West on the “Trail of Tears”, in 1830 and later, during the period of “Indian Removal”.
