"People see us as strange animals. If someone sees a prostitute in a bus wearing tight clothes and wearing make-up she is discriminated. One can tell that just with a particular look one is being discriminated, on the contrary if another woman from 'other category' (referring to non-prostitutes) gets onto a bus with a mini-skirt and the rest of it, no one sees her differently. Besides, people see her as being just fine."

STORYLINE

The oldest profession turned on Sunday to El Salvador's favourite sport to highlight its quest for rights.

Teams of prostitutes from El Salvador and Guatemala, played against each other in a soccer match aimed at showing the plight of prostitutes in those two countries.

The friendly match in the capital San Salvador was an experiment designed to bring together women from opposite sides.

Players from both teams called on their respective governments for protection from police abuse, condom promotion, help in getting out of prostitution and punishment for those who force women into it.

Although prostitution is not illegal in Guatemala nor El Salvador, the governments don't formally recognise it, leaving prostitutes with few rights.

The game ended in a 6-1 defeat for the El Salvadorean prostitutes.
