Christmas Isn’t Timeless. It Was Built. (And That Gives You a Choice)

Christmas feels ancient. Sacred. Like it’s always existed exactly as we know it.
But it hasn’t.

Long before December 25 meant Jesus, winter itself was the event. The solstice marked survival. The shortest days. The return of light. Feasts, candles, evergreen branches, and gathering weren’t religious aesthetics; they were relief.
When Christianity spread through Europe, it didn’t erase those rituals. It absorbed them. December 25 wasn’t chosen because of a birth certificate. It was chosen because people were already gathering then. Familiar rituals made conversion easier. Celebration became doctrine.

That doesn’t make Christmas fake. But it does make it constructed.
And when something is constructed, it’s shaped by power.
Over time, a spiritual story became a cultural default. Then an economic engine. Then a moral expectation. Joy assumed. Participation expected. Opting out quietly is punished.

Tradition isn’t timeless. It’s inherited.
Understanding the origins of Christmas doesn’t strip it of meaning; it gives you agency.
