UART Interview Questions Part 12: What is DMA-based UART communication?

DMA-based UART communication uses a Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller to transfer data directly between memory and the UART peripheral without continuous CPU involvement. Unlike polling or interrupt methods, where the CPU handles each byte, DMA automates the transfer, allowing the CPU to perform other tasks.

In transmission, the DMA fetches bytes from memory and feeds them to the UART data register until the transfer is complete. In reception, incoming UART data is stored directly into a memory buffer through DMA.

This approach is efficient for high-speed or large-volume data transfers because it reduces interrupt overhead, improves real-time performance, and frees CPU cycles. However, it requires careful buffer management and more complex configuration compared to simple interrupt-driven UART.
