This "HardTalk" discussion takes place in the National Commission on Human Rights office, in Jalan Latuharhari No.4-B, Menteng, Jakarta Pusat, and will be held on Thursday, 24th of May 2018, from 16.00 to 19.00.
Prior to the month of Ramadhan, Indonesia has been saddened with the loss of 28 lives due to terrorist attacks. The Mako Brimob riot have allegedly triggered other attacks in Surabaya, and recently, in Riau. Attackers are no longer fitting ‘conventional’ or ‘traditional’ profile of terrorists: the young, women and children are now involved. Recruitments and training are performed through social media and are more individual – attacks are therefore random – making it an ‘intelligence’ nightmare. Extremism and intolerance is now spread through social media, through organizations and teachings in schools and universities, by preachers in community and even government mosques. Number of convicted terrorists is increasing – Indonesian prisons and detention centres –as the riot revealed – do not have sufficient capacity and resources. The number Indonesian deportees and returnees are significant: Ministry of Social Affairs tasked to manage the group is also overwhelmed.
Solutions to counter extremism, therefore, should never be single dimensional. Have measures undertaken and proposed been sufficient? Are we too late? What steps should Indonesia take, as a nation, moving forward? The discussion is expected not only to bring about better understanding about the issue, but also for the Chevening alumni to advocate solutions to stakeholders concerned. The discussion will be a 2 hours discussion, to end with breaking of the fast or Iftar.
Address will be provided by Rob Fenn, Charge D'affairs, British Embassy and Ahmad Taufan Damanik, Chair, National Commission on Human Rights.
