Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has been sanctioned by the United States following her outspoken condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza.

During the Israeli war on Gaza, Albanese described the situation as “apocalyptic” and accused Israel of committing “one of the cruellest genocides in modern history.” She has called for a full arms embargo on Israel and for legal accountability of companies supporting illegal settlements.

The US decision to sanction Albanese has sparked widespread backlash from human rights advocates and legal experts, many of whom argue that she should be commended for her work — not punished.

The United States has a history of shielding Israel from international scrutiny, particularly under the Trump administration, which cut ties with UN agencies, defunded UNRWA, and sanctioned ICC judges after they pursued legal action against Israeli and American officials.
