Still in the Uk today but nowhere near Kielder where we were last week but also still far away from London and everywhere in the south. Whitby is where I'm at and its most famous for Dracula but that's not all it's famous for it played an important role in Britain's whaling industry during the 18th and 19th century. The shipbuilders here built specific sturdy vessels for whale hunting.

It's also the place where Captain James Cook learned to sail. He became one of the greatest explorers of all time mapping out the east coast of Australia and New Zealand as well as the Hawaiian Islands.

Another thing whitby is famous for is it's fish and chips so I went to supposedly the Uk's best chippie to see if it's true and I gotta say I don't really think they were much different to anywhere else but they were still tasty!

Of course Whitby's main tourist attraction is Whitby Abbey. Built in the 7th century when you look at it you can see there is a lot of inspiration for Dracula. The steps that I took to get to the Abbey are the same 199 steps that Dracula had to run up when his ship wrecked. I've not actually read the book but I'm aware he was a dog at the time.
Bram Stoker apparently took many inspirations from Whitby including the fact that his ship getting wrecked was based on a real ship that wrecked here in 1895, five years before Bram's visit. The real ship was a Russian vessel called the Dmitry. Whereas Dracula's ship was called Demeter.
We also know that on the 8th August in 1890 after reading a book in Whitby library about modern day Romania Bram Stoker decided to change the location of his story and no longer set the novel in Austria as he had intended, but he used that same date the 8th August as the day the Demeter shipwrecked.

And the last fun fact I'll leave you with is that some of the names on the gravestones in front of Whitby Abbey are the exact names that Bram Stoker used for his characters in the book. So if you ever do come to Whitby you'll be able to walk around and see which ones you recognise ;)
