What is the difference in behavior between DC and AC? Why are DC and AC breakers different, and are they interchangeable? These and other questions will be addressed in this 10 minute video about circuit breakers. As a DIY solar power enthusiast, it is helpful to understand basic principles of electricity and circuit breaker operation.

DC does not behave the same as AC, and therefore DC circuit breakers are different from their AC counterparts. In fact it is not recommended to use an AC breaker for DC. Technically, a DC breaker can handle AC, but I don't recommend swapping them at all.

Plotting AC and DC on paper helps understand why they are so different and have different circuit breaker requirements. I will explain why AC is easier to interrupt than DC, and why an AC breaker is not suitable for interrupting DC.
