Hello Everyone!
Today, we bring you exciting news from the world of women's cricket, specifically highlighting a remarkable achievement by the Indian women's team. In the fourth T20I match of their five-match series against Sri Lanka, held at the Greenfield International Stadium, India Women set a new record by posting their highest team total in T20I history.
The Indian side was asked to bat first, and right from the start, Smriti Mandhana made her aggressive intentions clear, striking a boundary on the very first ball of the match. After just two overs, India was off to a solid start, scoring 16 runs without losing a wicket. The momentum continued to build as Shafali Verma and Mandhana each hit a boundary in the third over, propelling the score to 26 without loss.
The fourth over saw Kawya Kavindi struggle, conceding 14 runs, with Mandhana hitting two fours and Verma adding another to the tally. By the end of the first power play, India had amassed an impressive 61 runs without losing a wicket. Notably, this partnership marked the 24th fifty-plus partnership for Mandhana and Verma in T20I cricket, setting a record for the highest partnership for any wicket.
In a significant personal milestone, Smriti Mandhana crossed the 10,000-run mark in women's international cricket during the seventh over. This achievement placed her among an elite group of only four women cricketers to reach this milestone, joining the ranks of Mithali Raj, Suzie Bates, and Charlotte Edwards, and making her the second Indian woman to do so.
As the innings progressed, India reached 85 runs without a loss after ten overs, with both openers providing a fantastic foundation. Shafali Verma then completed her half-century in just 30 balls during the 11th over, marking her third consecutive fifty in the ongoing series. In that same over, India crossed the 100-run mark.
Mandhana also reached her fifty in the 12th over, taking 35 balls to do so. With this, she recorded her 32nd fifty-plus score in WT20Is, the highest by any batter, surpassing notable players like Suzie Bates and Beth Mooney, who each have 29.
Sri Lanka finally broke through the Indian defense when Nimasha Madushani dismissed Shafali Verma in the 16th over. Verma had scored an impressive 79 runs off 46 balls, featuring 12 fours and one six. Mandhana followed shortly after, falling to Malsha Shehani for 80 runs off 48 deliveries, which included 11 fours and three sixes.
As the innings neared its conclusion, Richa Ghosh showcased her explosive batting skills, scoring an unbeaten 40 runs off just 16 balls, which included four boundaries and three sixes. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributed with a quick 16 runs off 10 balls, helping the team set a formidable target of 222 runs by finishing their innings at 221 for 2 in 20 overs.
This remarkable performance not only highlights the strength of the Indian women's cricket team but also sets a high standard for the remaining matches in the series.
