Hello and welcome from Vienna, this time from a cemetery. The Sankt Marxer Friedhof is a cemetery in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstraße, which was closed in 1874. Around 15,000 burials took place here between 1784 and 1874. It was closed when the central cemetery opened, which offers significantly more space for the deceased. In 1945, during the Battle of Vienna, the cemetery was the scene of hostilities between the Red Army and an SS unit, and parts of the area had been badly damaged by bombs in the preceding months. Soon after the end of the war, work began again on repairing the site, so that the cemetery was open to the public again as early as August 3, 1946. The City of Vienna manages the Sankt Marxer Friedhof as a publicly accessible park. Yes, the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is also lying around here, in an unmarked shaft grave, the simplest form of burial at the time. Nevertheless, he subsequently received a beautiful official memorial, which of course I also visit briefly. I hope I was able to convey some cemetery romance and autumn feeling to you with this video from Sankt Marx Cemetery.
