My Weight Watcher journey began when I developed arthritis of my knee. My knee hurt (due to excess weight that caused cartilage breakdown--my ortho said that for every extra pound of weight that's 7 pounds on the knees!), and so I exercised even less, and weighed even more. I found I couldn't travel as I'd dreamed, as the bugger really hurt walking on the cobblestone streets of ancient Rome.

My first smart move, even before starting WW) was to enroll in a deep-water pool aerobics class. We met three times weekly, strapped on floatation belts, and used buoyant foam barbells. This exercise is great for people with bad knees, hips, backs...because you're not thumping along the bottom of the pool or a walking track or treadmill! My local Parks and Recreation department offers these classes at 3 one hour classes per week, for $30/month. You cannot beat the deal with a stick!

I heard she ran a fun class,
Aqua-aerobic style.
And so I signed up for it
To rest my knees a while.
And there she was, our Nita
A mad gleam in her eyes…

Shredding my triceps with ‘washboards’,
Crunching my abs with a laugh.
We’re in deep-water aerobics:
Buoyant barbells, blue float belts.
Changing my whole life, with this class
Saving me softly. With chlorine.

I wasn’t a believer,
Embarrassed by cellulite.
Resolved to gain my health,
But I’m not a water sprite.
I prayed those reps would finish,
But Nita kept right on…

She pushed as if she knew me;
Plump and shaped like a pear.
Drill sergeant-mermaid mixed
With tender-loving-care.
But Nita kept on cheering
Until she made me strong…
