There are nearly 300 million migrant workers around the world sending money to support their families back home. While a weekly average of $200 per worker seems small, these workers collectively send billions of dollars home yearly, more than foreign aid and global foreign direct investment combined. These remittances can account for nearly half of a country's GDP.

But workers often borrow years of their potential salary to recruitment agencies just to get a job. Is it worth the risk? Why does sending money home matter?
