Tommy Good and the Tabs were a Detroit band who were discovered by Motown's art director Bernard Yeszin (one of his best-known covers was the Mary Wells Sings My Guy album.) The band was playing at a club called The Duchess, when Yeszin walked in, enjoyed what he heard and brought the group to the attention of produer Clarence Paul who in turn, told Berry Gordy.

Signed to Motown, it seems Tommy was recorded as a solo artist as well as doing some recordings with the band. The one song released to the public was "Baby I Miss You," a William Stevenson production. Motown apparently kept Tommy busy in the studio as there are quite a few recordings that came out recently on a fantastic Tamla-Motown collection cd. The cd reveals that Tommy Good recorded with quite a few Motown producers, including our guys of the hour, Robert Staunton and Robert Walker.

"Talk About A Good Feeling" is a collaboration between Staunton, Walker and Charles Jones. The title works two ways: naming the song and describing the pleasure of listening to this song. It's easy to hear what Bernard Yeszin, Clarence Paul and Berry Gordy found appealing in Tommy Good's voice- hands down, he had it. A smooth, confident delivery, no doubt honed by long hours performing live with the Tabs.

The true mark of just how Good Tommy was is that Marvin Gaye also recorded this tune and Tommy's version is by no means a 2nd place effort. Both gave the song excellent readings with Tommy coming across as an accomplished, suave balladeer. There isn't a false note or one moment where Tommy comes across as anything but a seasoned pro.

The Andantes are supurb here and the Yes! Yes! Yes! at the top of this is in relation to a line they sing a few times here- actually, it's more like Yes! Yes! Wooooo! Oh, that is priceless!

Had more recordings been released, Tommy certainly could have enjoyed a career of note with the label. As it turns out, the U.K. / Northern Soul scene knows a good thing when they hear it and Tommy Good was invited there to perform live recently.
