Spot the difference! Took the opening riff from Pink Floyd's Money to test the claim that alder vs ash makes a difference. After posting, and with the benefit of some expert commentary, the general feeling is that the fretboard makes more of a difference. You decide! Here's a 1972 Fender Precision with alder body and rosewood fretboard up against a 1982 Fender Precision with ash body and maple board. All settings the same, apart from the change of guitars mid-way through. The answer should be that the alder/rosewood combo delivers your classic James Jamerson warmth, and the ash/maple combo your Andy Rourke punch and treble. And the results are in - and the difference is, well, subtle, but definitely there. Just goes to show what everyone says is true . . . at least when it comes to the effect of wood choice for a guitar's build ;-).
