It’s always good to have a few survival skills under your belt.
In this video I’ll show you how to build a fire without matches using a simple bow drill set, just like the old Comanche and Cheyenne trailsmen used to do before we ever came here.

We’ll walk through it step by step:

Choosing the right wood (dead, dry standing cedar & yucca)

Shaping your fireboard and spindle

Cutting the V-notch and divot so your ember has somewhere to grow

How tight your bow string should really be

Foot position, hand brace, and how to keep everything stable

Letting the ember sit and breathe instead of panicking and blowing it out

Building a good “bird’s nest” of tinder and easing it into flame

This is the kind of skill you want to practice at home before you ever need it. Once you get it down, it’s like riding a bicycle – you won’t forget it, even years later.

What I’m using in this video:

Fireboard: dead cedar, split flat

Spindle: yucca (cedar or yucca both work)

Bow: any curved stick with paracord (shoelace works in a pinch)

Handhold: scrap wood with a hole (a rock or any block will do)

Tinder: dry grass, pine straw, fine bark – very dry, shredded fine

A few tips:

Look for dead standing wood, not stuff laying on the ground soaking up moisture.

Don’t rush the ember. Let it sit and glow before you move it to your tinder.

Keep your kindling and firewood right next to you so you’re not running around once it lights.

On a dry day, this is much easier than it looks here in the humidity.
