Lesson 102- Shrine (Exodus 20:22-26)
1. The Covenant Code is given after the single event of God’s appearance. The awestruck people beg Moses to mediate any further commandments.
2. Now God provides various other laws and instructions concerning daily practices of life. God begins with the laws concerning the Altar or Shrine. Divine and human encounter is God’s to regulate.
3. No statues of deities are permitted in Yahweh’s sanctuary because he spoke from heaven, that is, invisibly, with no form to be reproduced by a statue. We can notice in this instruction that God reminds the people of the 1st commandment.
4. Altars are to be built according to divine specifications, of earth or of unhewn stone. In the whole offering, an animal is completely consumed on the altar in expiation for sin.
5. Even after few years, when there are many altars built, God must designate the site, must make it a place where his name, his presence, is there to bless the life of the worshiper. Finally, whatever is unholy to the sacred sphere must be avoided.
Life Lessons: 1) It was only God’s voice that was heard and there was no form of Yahweh or God the Father that is exposed. Therefore, God instructs us not to create his form, his shape or his statue that doesn’t exist. 2) God decides the place of his presence and there is no right for humans to decide. It is always God’s plan to designate the site, therefore we have to wait for God’s providence to create a place of his presence such as church, shrine, altar, etc.
