Lean Manufacturing and Total Quality Management (TQM) are two influential methodologies in industrial engineering, each with its unique focus and approach.



▶ Lean Manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing, derived from the Toyota Production System (TPS), primarily focuses on the elimination of waste (muda) in all forms, including overproduction, waiting time, transportation, over-processing, excess inventory, unnecessary motion, and defects.

The goal of Lean is to create more value for customers by optimizing the flow of products and services through entire value streams.

It emphasizes the principles of just-in-time production and jidoka (automation with a human touch), and promotes a culture of continuous improvement (kaizen).



▶ Total Quality Management

On the other hand, TQM is a management approach aimed at embedding awareness of quality in all organizational processes. It originated in the 1920s with statistical quality control and was further developed in post-war Japan.

TQM focuses on long-term success through customer satisfaction and benefits all members of the organization. It involves the continuous improvement of organizational performance through the involvement of all employees.

Key elements of TQM include a focus on the customer, involvement of all employees, process thinking, continuous improvement, and data-based decision making.



▶ Conclusions

While both Lean and TQM aim to improve efficiency and quality, they differ in their approach.

Lean focuses on process flow and waste elimination to improve efficiency and value for the customer, while TQM focuses on improving the quality of products and services to achieve customer satisfaction.

However, they are not mutually exclusive and many organizations implement both methodologies to achieve their operational and quality goals.
