We can find the factors of 36 (thirty-six) by carefully determining all the combinations of whole numbers that go into 36 without leaving a remainder.

One method is to start with the number 1 and then go through dividing whole numbers up to 36. When we do this we fine that 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36 all go into 36 without leaving a remainder. Therefore, these are considered to be the factors of 36.

The pairs of numbers that we can multiply to equal 36 are called the factor pairs. For 36 the factor pairs are (1,36), (2,18), (3, 12), (4,9), and (6,6).

Note that the negative factors of twelve would be:
(-1,-36), (-2,-18), (-3, -12), (-4,-9), and (-6,-6).

We find the prime factors of twelve by further finding the factors of these numbers until we are left with only prime numbers. For twelve we find that 2 * 3 * 3 *3 are the prime numbers of 36.

When finding factors is important to know your multiplication tables from 1 to 36. This makes the process much faster and less prone to error.
