Welcome to part two of our recent mowing technology series. In our first video, we explored the world of traditional rotary and cylinder mowers.

In this video, we’re heading into the future with the rise of robot mowers and automated mowing technology.

In the Australian domestic market, robot mowers are becoming increasingly popular for homeowners looking for convenience, quiet operation, and a well maintained lawn.

They’re electric, low-noise, emission-free and obviously a great time saver as well.

Common features of robot mowers:
• Create task zones for each area of your yard.
• Set mowing schedules; day, time & frequency.
• Set mowing modes for each zone. Cutting path, speed, obstacle detection.
• Create no-go zones for areas that do not require mowing, like regular plant beds, children’s playgrounds, or pools.

How Do They Work?
Older models use a boundary wire installed around the perimeter of your lawn within the soil.

Inside that space, the mower operates on a random or GPS-guided path, trimming little, but often. This limits the amount of large clip that goes back into the profile, helping the clip break down faster allowing it to become a food source.

Newer models have evolved to no longer require a boundary wire and are confined to a perimeter using GPS technology. Usually through the installation of a small satellite dish or receiver.

Most of these mowers are app-controlled, automatically returning to their docking stations to charge, and many can mow rain or shine.

Two of the most well-known manufacturers who have entered the robotic mower market include:

Husqvarna Automower
The Automower was one of the first robot mowers to become available here in Australia. Husqvarna is a trusted name in the robot mower space and have developed a range of models like the 315X and 430X which use GPS-assisted navigation and can handle complex lawns with slopes and tight spaces.

Husqvarna also has larger models for difficult terrain and commercial areas like sports fields.

Yuka Robotic Lawn Mower
YUKA Robotic Lawn Mowers are fully autonomous and wire-free. Once you set up the invisible fence around all the areas to be mowed it’s good to go.

Once the installation is finalised, the Yuka will be scheduled to mow and return home to recharge by itself with no further input required.

Commercial Robotic Mowing
But it’s not just about backyards when it comes to the evolution of mowing technology. In the commercial space, robotic mowing and innovations allowing further autonomy are evolving fast.

Sabanto
A US-based ag-tech company is offering full autonomy for existing commercial mowers and tractors. Their technology can automate entire mowing or farming operations with no human in the seat – just an operator monitoring remotely.

Trimax OptiAdjust
Trimax designs, develops and manufactures tractor powered roller mower equipment for commercial industry.

A new innovation called the OptiAdjust System is available in their Pegasus S5 Mower. This new technology enables the operator to change mowing heights using an app on their phone. Before this innovation, changing the mowing heights on these sorts of large cutting decks had to be done manually, which was quite time consuming.

The app allows specific fields or paddocks to be saved with specific height settings, allowing the operator to change heights for a different turf variety like TifTuf at the press of a button.

From AI-powered route planning to mowers that map and learn your lawn like a Roomba, the future of mowing seems to be heading towards autonomous. For turf professionals, these tools could save hundreds of man-hours per year.
