Spectacular new Class 66 from Hornby

Hornby TT:120 Colas Rail Freight Class 66 66850 'David Maidment OBE', analogue DC version.

I didn't think I was going to get this before Christmas, but a delivery arrived this afternoon with a parcel from Santa..., well actually Hornby!

The Class 66 is the latest of the TT:120 locomotives to arrive. I hadn't planned on getting on straight away but I changed my mind and put in an order. Colas Rail Freight operate one of the few remaining freight trains on the real life Ayrshire railways that Hollybush is loosely based on, with the aviation fuel delivery to Prestwick Airport. 66s were frequently seen on the Dalmellington to Ayr line when the Chalmerston open cast coal mine was still in operation.

I don't have any modern freight wagons just yet, so for its first run out I'm operating a charter Pullman Christmas Special. A nice slow run out so as not to spill the first class passenger's pricey dinners!

I'm very impressed with this loco. The detail is excellent, as I've come to expect from Hornby's TT:120 range. It's got some serious weight to it, so I expect it will be capable of hauling long heavy coal trains. It's ran smoothly right from the moment it came out the box, and as it's fitted with the five pole motor type that has so far run flawlessly in my HST I'm not anticipating any problems with it.

Note - You might here some clicks in the running video, that was later diagnosed as a wheel that had come slightly out of align on one of the Pullman cars jumping on points, it's sorted now.

Thank you for watching, hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
