Theodor “Teddy” Osterkamp (1892–1975) was one of Germany’s most accomplished military aviators, distinguished for his service in both World War I and World War II. Born in Düsseldorf, he joined the Imperial German Navy before transferring to naval aviation during the First World War.

Osterkamp became a successful fighter pilot, credited with 32 aerial victories, making him one of Germany’s notable WWI aces. He served with the Marineflieger (Naval Air Service) and gained a reputation for skill, aggressiveness, and leadership in a domain dominated by Army pilots. For his combat achievements, he received Germany’s highest decoration, the Pour le Mérite (“Blue Max”).

Between the wars, Osterkamp remained connected to aviation through commercial and civil flying roles. With the rise of the Luftwaffe in the 1930s, he rejoined military service and played a key leadership role in the rebuilt German Air Force. During World War II, he commanded significant air formations, including Jagdgeschwader 51 (JG 51) during the early campaigns in France and the Battle of Britain.

Despite his experience, Osterkamp’s outspoken criticism of Luftwaffe leadership—especially Hermann Göring’s mismanagement—led to tension. In 1941 he was relieved of frontline command, serving the remainder of the war in administrative and inspection roles.

After Germany’s defeat, he retired into private life and remained involved in aviation circles until his death in 1975. Osterkamp is remembered as one of the few pilots to earn distinction as a combat ace in both world wars, and as a complex figure whose career bridged aviation’s earliest days and its rise into modern warfare.
