Behind The Magic of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Let’s talk about Marvel Phase Four’s Black Panther Wakanda Forever. Director and co-writer, Ryan Coogler really struggled with the loss of his hero, Chadwick Boseman. He ended up having to rewrite the entire script due to his absence, which was an emotionally difficult process for the entire cast. He ended up writing the story through Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri’s perspective. Not only was Letitia Wright one of Chadwick Boseman’s favorite performers to work with, but the loss of his character would have definitely hit her the hardest. She ended up dedicating every aspect of her performance to him, and everyone took honoring his character very seriously. Aside from that, there were a lot of challenges to overcome when bringing this film together. For one, there were dozens of underwater scenes – the cast spent eight hours a day filming in a huge water tank. Here’s the kicker – most everyone couldn’t swim! They all either had to learn how to swim from scratch, or learn how to swim well enough to stay in the water for that long. Even Ryan Coogler had to learn! There was also a pretty serious on-set injury. Letitita Wright took a pretty severe tumble and ended up in the hospital with a fractured shoulder and a concussion. Filming had to be paused for over two months while she recovered.
