In this video we show you how to install an aftermarket automatic transmission temperature gauge on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner. 1st Gen Tacomas are very similar to 3rd Gen 4runners so I would bet it would be a similar if not an identical installation. Many vehicles offer transmission temperature information via the OBDII port but some don't. 1999-2002 4runners do provide trans temp info. You access it via the OBDII port with a tool like a Scan Gauge or via an OBDII Bluetooth reader that sends information to a phone app like Torque Pro. For 1996-1998 4runners, if you want to monitor transmission temps, you have to install an aftermarket gauge.
