(14 Feb 2020) As fighting continues in the last rebel-held stronghold in northwest Syria, many civilians have been forced to flee and face a harsh life in makeshift camps covered in snow.
More than 140,000 Syrians have been displaced in the last three days alone by continued violence in the country's northwest, bringing the total of those uprooted by the ongoing Syrian government offensive against the last opposition stronghold to over 800,000.
More than half of the total are estimated to be children.
The humanitarian crisis in the already overcrowded opposition-held enclave is compounded by freezing weather conditions, and existing severe needs.
At a makeshift camp, civilians struggle with the harsh conditions. Residents say they have little supplies to fight against severe cold and snow.
"We are not able to withstand this," said Umm Muhammed, a resident of Yazibagh camp. "It's cold, it's snowing and our life is terrible. I am an old woman with children. No one is taking care of us."
The government offensive, backed by Russia, has intensified since December 1 and expanded to include southern and eastern Idlib province, as well as southern and western Aleppo countryside, an area home to an estimated four million people.
Most have already been displaced from other parts of Syria because of the ongoing conflict.
