Fannie Lou Hamer was a Black civil rights activist born in 1917 in Mississippi. She became nationally known in the 1960s for her powerful speeches and grassroots organizing. Raised in a family of sharecroppers, she experienced extreme poverty and systemic racism. In 1962, she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked to register Black voters in the segregated South.

Hamer gained national attention in 1964 as a leader of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which challenged the all-white Mississippi delegation at the Democratic National Convention. Her televised testimony about being jailed and beaten for trying to vote moved the country and exposed the brutality of Jim Crow laws.

She also worked on issues of economic justice, helping to found the Freedom Farm Cooperative to aid poor Black farmers. Despite threats and violence, she remained outspoken and courageous until her death in 1977. Her legacy is that of a fearless voice for justice, dignity, and human rights.
