The Cataldo Mission is the oldest standing building in all of Idaho. It's found in Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park. The Mission of the Sacred Heart in Cataldo was constructed between 1840 and 1853 by Catholic missionaries and members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe.
Fr. Ravalli was educated in physics, art and engineering in Italy. What he, his brother's and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe members manged to build in Idaho with only one axe, one pully, no nails and few tools is incredible. The Priest's and the Native American's created an Altar and pained it with wax to make it look like marble, carved candle holders made with tin cans, carved statutes from wood. The wall paper design's were made by the Native's, painted using berries and still stands today. The Coeur d'Alene Mission history is amazing and precious. The two faith's lived together with, respect and love while combining both faiths. The Native American's brought their own design's, and skills to help make the church of worship for all. The unique star on the front of the church and the cross were of the Native's own design as well as the many carvings decorating the inside of the church.
The park features the Sacred Heart Mission building, a restored Parish House and an historic cemetery. The visitor center includes a gift shop and an interpretive movie about the history of the Mission and the Coeur d'Alene Indians. For the last 100 years every August the Tribe holds a yearly Pilgrimage of The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Honoring The Spirit of The Ancestors. It's truly breathtaking and such an honor to walk on such holy ground. I was so blessed to be well enough to visit~
