Watercolor speaks in nuance. It rewards patience, embraces imperfection, and reveals its depth in the subtlest ways. That is part of what drew me to it, and part of what inspired this special challenge.

I'm Milena, a Serbian artist based in Canada, and my work often navigates emotional complexity. As someone who came to watercolor from a background in psychology, fashion design, and Japanese studies, I'm drawn to what's difficult to name - the space between presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity.

My paintings have appeared in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour's Open Water International Exhibition, numerous juried shows with the Federation of Canadian Artists, and juried private gallery exhibitions.

In 2024 I was named one of the "Top 100 Emerging Artists" by the Arts to Hearts Project, and my work has been featured in Splash 26: Best of Watercolor, Art and Color 365, 100 Emerging Artists book, among other publications. My illustrations also grace several book covers and interiors. I am proud to serve as your Ontario Representative for IWS-Canada and to support all of you as part of our growing watercolor community.
This is my first time curating a contest for IWS-Canada, and I'm thrilled to invite you into a theme that's close to my heart!
The Theme: Shade

"Shade" can mean many things: the literal play of light and shadow, a subtle mood, a moment of quiet, a sense of coolness or withdrawal, or even emotional or psychological depth. I'm interested in seeing how artists interpret this idea in their own way, using the evocative, unpredictable nature of watercolor to express something beyond the obvious.
Whether your approach is abstract or representational, structured or intuitive, I'll be looking for work that uses the medium thoughtfully and with intention and that leans into tone, atmosphere, and depth.

Thanks to the generous support of Rockwell and IWS Canada, the selected artist will receive my own curated set of professional-grade watercolour tubes in rich, moody tones:
COLOR KwWE

• Perylene Green - deep, mossy, and dramatic
• Sea Blue Black - cool, brooding, and ocean-toned
• Sepia - earthy and expressive
• Neutral Tint - perfect for soft contrast and layering shadows

These are among my most-used colors. They allow for softness, subtlety, and emotional presence without being heavy-handed.

This is a chance to slow down and explore the edges of visibility in both form and feeling. I hope you'll take this theme and make it your own. I can't wait to see what emerges from the shade.
