Pleural Effusion: Explanation of X-ray Findings

Obliteration of the costophrenic angle occurs due to the presence of pleural fluid. The fluid forms a meniscus with a concave upper border and an ascending lateral tip. As well, because of this dense opacity, the interface between the fluid and heart border/hemidiaphragm is indistinct; this is known as the silhouette sign. Unlike with consolidation, air bronchograms are not present.
