Walabot DIY2 Unboxed, Reviewed and Compared Against Cheaper Alternatives

I've picked up the Walabot DIY2 which supports Iphone and Arduino in this version. Given all of the work we're doing hanging pictures and shelves, I thought it worth a shot. After a quick unboxing we get right into software installation and firmware upgrade.

One issue is the amount of space required for calibration, a step conducted with each use. given a small area it would be unrealistic to conduct such a step. There are two modes of operation, regular and expert, regular being a cartoon representation of items behind the wall, expert, more of a heat map. Expert mode in my opinion is more useful. I could not find an effect for the slider in expert mode however. Some momentary false positives appear, but not long enough to trick the user.

Comparisons made with other beam finders were interesting. Obviously magnetic ones would only work for nails, but the zircon at a tenth of the price gave the Walabot a run for its money.
