In 1984, an horrible incident took place when Peter Verhulsel and his mates went cave exploring in South Africa’s #SterkfonteinCaves. They attempted to determine the depth of one of the lakes, Milner Hall, in the Sterkfontein chambers. However, Peter’s curiosity brought him into big trouble.

The Sterkfontein caves are located around 6 miles (11 km) from Krugersdorp, one hour drive from Johannesburg, South Africa. They were opened to the public in 1900 after being found in or around 1896 or 1897. Geologist Dr. D. Draper had previously reported on the finding of #fossile bones nearby in 1895, but it would take many more years before it was understood that Sterkfontein and other #caveexploringdisasters had been utilized by prehistoric humans. Following that, comparable deposits were discovered on the nearby farm of Kromdraai, where a paleontological Reserve was established in 1946.

The Sterkfontein caves site also provides easy access to the caves via contemporary walkways and a boardwalk that runs past the excavation site where famous fossils have been found. The Sterkfontein Caverns tours begin above ground and take tourists deep into the caves to learn about the caves' history, what scientists discovered inside, and how stalagmites and stalactites developed.
