Starting this week, stimulus payments will be on their way to nearly every adult in Tampa Bay. Knowing how badly scammers want that money, Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren is sharing the most effective ways to spot and stop these scams—to “Protect Your Check.”

Warren is especially familiar with the devious methods COVID-19 scammers will use to try to separate Floridians from their stimulus checks, which are officially known as Economic Impact Payments. Before becoming Hillsborough County’s State Attorney, Warren spent eight years with the U.S. Department of Justice prosecuting fraud and teaching Americans how to avoid financial scams.

Already, more than 13,000 complaints of fraud related to coronavirus have been filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The total amount lost in these claims is nearly $10 million—and this is before the first stimulus checks have even been delivered.
