Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport played between two sides of eleven players each, where the main objective is to score more runs than the opposition.

Cricket is played on a large oval field with a rectangular 22-yard pitch in the center, with a wicket (three stumps and two bails) at each end. One team bats, trying to score runs, while the other team bowls and fields, trying to limit runs and dismiss the batters.

A batter scores runs by hitting the ball bowled toward the wicket and running to the opposite end of the pitch, or by hitting the ball to the boundary. If the ball reaches the boundary after touching the ground it counts as four runs, and if it crosses the boundary on the full it counts as six runs.

Batters can be dismissed in several ways, the most common being bowled (the ball hits the stumps), caught (a fielder catches the ball before it bounces), or run out (the fielding side breaks the wicket before the batter completes a run). Once ten batters are out, that team’s innings ends and the teams swap roles.

Cricket is played in multiple formats that differ mainly by length: Test matches can last up to five days, One Day Internationals are limited to 50 overs per side, and Twenty20 (T20) games are 20 overs per side. Despite the different formats, all use the same core skills of batting, bowling, and fielding.

The game originated in England and is now especially popular in countries such as India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, and the West Indies. International competitions are overseen by the International Cricket Council (ICC), including major events like the Cricket World Cup.
