This morning’s mission was clear — reach the summit of Sage Hill.

But this was never meant to be an ordinary hike.

We deliberately chose a brand-new route, starting from Fig Tree Hill and pushing through the boundary lands of Mill Hill Estate. From the outset, we knew this path would test us. Unlike the more familiar approaches, this route is rarely used — dominated by deep gorges that demand steep descents followed by punishing climbs back out.

Progress was slow and hard-earned.

The real obstacle, however, was the dense spread of fever grass blanketing the terrain. It created a natural barrier that eventually forced us to turn back before reaching higher elevation. We didn’t even get high enough to sight the Sage Hill sugar mill tower — our intended visual marker.

Despite Fig Tree Hill and Mill Hill sitting side by side, the landscape between them proved deceptive. The maze of gorges and open fever grass meadows became the defining challenge of the day.

Yet, the experience was far from disappointing.

The hike was exciting, immersive, and ultimately rewarding — the kind of expedition that expands knowledge of the land rather than simply conquers it.

Next time, the plan is strategic:

We’ll approach Sage Hill from the Sawcolt and John Hughes side — a more reliable access route — and then work backward to properly explore and map the Fig Tree Hill to Mill Hill connection.

Mission incomplete…
But knowledge gained.
