Bharata Lila is a traditional performing art form of the state of Odisha. It is a musical dance-drama on the story of Subhadra & Arjuna’s marriage, from the Mahabharata. The character of the duari (doorkeeper) is the messenger in between, whose job is to reconcile the hesitant lovers. It was created towards the end of the nineteenth century by the poet Dinabandhu Dasa of Ganjam, Odisha. The intent was to entertain Odia people working in the tea gardens of Rangoon; Dinabandhu himself was one among them.

The character of the duari is the fulcrum of the play. To play the part requires enormous knowledge of the shastras, impeccable comic timing and a versatile, finely modulated voice. Guru Rankanidhi Behera, renowned veteran exponent of the form, has preserved the original form, guarding it from commercialistic deviations and sanitisation attempts. In this video, he performs a condensed version of Bharata Lila along with his troupe.
