Over the course of the SySTEM 2020 project, one of the aims has been to generate an in-depth look at science learning in the non-formal sector, designing a toolkit of frameworks, tools, and practices for the evaluation of non-formal science education programmes. One element of this was to find a way to enable learners themselves to evaluate their own learning whilst also being a part of the whole learning process e.g. by formulating or implementing research activities such as data collection.

One way SySTEM 2020 has attempted to achieve this is through an ‘observation mapper’ - a DIY electronics instrument that can be made with learners as part of a workshop or programme, which allows data collection and data visualisation to become part of the reflective sense-making process.

The tool can be used to map a host of different outdoor observations - for example, the spread of an invasive species or litter mapping.  As we demonstrate with this video, your community can be a part of the whole process, from making the device to collecting and visualising the data. We introduce Luka Žagar, STEAM enthusiast from the Kersnikova Institute, Slovenia, who takes you through the tools you need to build such a device, and how you can do it yourself.
