When hiking and backpacking in the outdoors, a dislocated shoulder is one of the most common injuries. It is important to assess between a fracture or dislocation. Should you attempt to fix the shoulder or transport? This is directly proportionate to morbidity, severity, age of the injured and most importantly, how far away you are from a clinic or emergency room. Whether you try to reduce the shoulder or transport, you should always sling and swath that shoulder for stabilization and safety. If any meds are given, you should make sure there is an escort down the trail, back to transport and ensure no further injury occurs from falling.
