Judith Heumann was a true icon in the Disability Rights movement which, by the way, that was a thing. We just don’t really learn about it in school. Heumann used a wheelchair for mobility as a result of contracting polio at eighteen months old. All throughout her life, seeing the world from a wheelchair helped Huemann see just how unaccommodating the world truly is to those who live with disabilities. Moreover, Heumann experienced first hand how persons with disabilities like herself were seen as less valuable than those who didn’t have disabilities, and were made to feel unwelcome in all kinds of public places. She led Americans with disabilities in the fight for their right to be seen and treated as full-fledged members of society. Even in the 21st century, Heumann continued to speak on behalf of disabled people everywhere through books, podcasts, speeches, and more. She literally fought for the rights of the disabled to her dying breath, which she recently took on March 4, 2023 at the age of 75. Today, I want to honor Heumann’s memory with a video essay on her life and legacy.
