On March 3rd, 1974, Elvis played two shows as part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, breaking his own 1970 attendance record at the event, with over 44 000 people at the evening performance.

This is the complete soundboard for the matinee show, and is fascinating on a number of levels. Elvis and the band were marooned in the centre of the giant stadium on a small revolving stage, well away from the audience in the stands. There was no room for the orchestra, giving the show a less grandiose than usual, but more basic rock and roll feel.

James Burton’s guitar work is a real highlight in this show, and it’s well worth listening to the extended instrumental jam at the end of the performance, which kept the vibe going while Elvis did a lap of honour in an open red Ford Bronco.

The Houston Chronicle reviewed the matinee, and having publicly patronised and insulted a female fan for her weight, her genuine excitement about seeing Elvis, the way she held her binoculars, and even her Southern accent, went on to offer some observations about the performance;

“…While the bandstand slowly turned 180 degrees (the cheap-seaters never got more than a profile), Elvis worked his little heart out for about 50 minutes (and again, I assume, at the Sunday evening performance). The act was less than dynamite, although I can't truly think of an act in show business that could play that joint and expect to do more than survive…Presley now does a Las Vegas headliner act. It's a good one, but, heaven knows, the Dome's not the place to stage it (less Presley's fault than the people who booked him here) …”
