Designed for the AQA paper, this mock exam is for GCSE English Language 9-1 Paper 1 Section A. This consists of four questions, 3 worth 20 marks and a fourth, also worth 20 marks.

This extract is from the opening of The Hole in the Wall, a novel by Arthur Morrison. Set in the East End of London, it was published in 1902 and it is set then. In this section the narrator’s mother has died in giving birth to a baby boy, born dead. It sounds miserable to say the least but is actually a very enjoyable - if challenging - source. This is probably suitable to stretch students aiming for a grade 5 or above but can be attempted by any students.
