Sewing the Simplicity 1356 Sewing Pattern | Reversible Dress | Sew With Me

In today's video, I used the sewing pattern Simplicity 1356. It’s an adorable reversible dress pattern with a tie front. You can design this differently in many ways. I chose a vintage floral rayon challis as my main fabric and the blush dot challis as my secondary, or peek-a-boo fabric if you will.

I love the results! Would I use this pattern again? Yes! I would use this pattern again, but I would not use the Challis fabric. I love that the fabric is flowy; it looks beautiful, but it was too much for me. I think it would be very difficult for a beginner sewer to use this type of fabric.

I liked that there were only three sewing pattern pieces in the pattern. It was pretty strange to be asked to cut crosswise since my fabric texture was running the opposite way, but it worked out, and I actually don’t mind it.

Beyond the required sewing pattern pieces, it requires 4 18” ribbons.

The instructions were easy to follow, but I can see a total beginner having some issues. The instructions were okay for someone with basic knowledge of sewing, but they could be improved. For being made in 2014, it felt a little old school.

I changed a few things on the pattern and sewing, such as changing the length of the sewing pattern by 4 inches to fit my short legs. I’m 5’4”.

I sewed the front tie my way. My way was more manageable and looked less bulky. I also changed how I sewed the shoulders to test my hand-sewing skills. I think I did just fine. With more practice, it will definitely look more professional.

Ultimately, I enjoyed sewing this dress and can wear it to family outings or the grocery store. If you feel cute, it can be an everyday dress. Depending on the fabric chosen, you can even turn it into a formal dress.

What do I feel the Cons are?
1. I didn’t realize that the front part of the dress would also have a tie in the back.
2 Let’s hope I won't have to wear this on a super windy day!
3 It is not super beginner-friendly; the instructions are not for a total beginner.

What are the Pros?
1 This dress is cute and can offer many different looks with your fabric choice.
2 Has only three sewing patterns.
3 Very quick sew after the first try.
4 It’s reversible. Get two dresses in one. Win, Win!
